Paris Fashion Week AW 26: Elie Saab FW 2026/2027 & Gothic Romanticism

The Elie Saab Fall–Winter 2026/2027 womenswear collection presented at Paris Fashion Week signals a sophisticated evolution for the house. Known for ethereal evening gowns and luminous femininity, the designer introduces a darker, sharper aesthetic this season—best described as Gothic Romanticism.

The collection maintains the Maison’s signature romance but layers it with urban strength through deeper colour palettes, structured silhouettes, and dramatic material contrasts. The result is a refined balance of softness and authority that reflects a broader industry movement toward structured glamour and modern sensuality.

Below are the key fashion trends emerging from the Elie Saab FW 26/27 runway.

Floral Noir: Dark Florals Replace Traditional Romance

One of the most prominent themes across the collection is the rise of “Floral Noir.”

Instead of pastel florals traditionally associated with romantic eveningwear, the runway embraces darker botanical motifs rendered in monochromatic black, charcoal, and midnight tones. Florals appear layered onto sheer lace or placed against shadowy backgrounds, creating a more mysterious and dramatic visual language.

A defining detail is the use of three-dimensional floral appliqués and embroidery, which appear to bloom from sheer fabrics. These sculptural elements add depth and texture while reinforcing the Gothic romantic narrative.

This approach transforms florals from delicate embellishment into architectural decoration, giving classic motifs a contemporary edge.

High-Shine Patent vs. Sheer Lace

Material contrast plays a crucial role in the collection’s visual impact. Saab juxtaposes delicate lace with bold, high-gloss fabrics to create a striking duality between vulnerability and strength.

On one side of the spectrum are high-neck, long-sleeved lace gowns that create a second-skin effect. The sheer fabrics hug the body while maintaining an airy lightness.

Balancing these ethereal looks are black patent leather (vinyl) dresses with glossy surfaces that reflect runway lighting dramatically. Oversized floral motifs—sometimes appearing in vibrant tones such as bubblegum pink—introduce a surprising element of playfulness within the otherwise dark palette.

This contrast between fragile lace and protective leather highlights a key FW 2026 fashion narrative: romance reinforced by structure.

Power Silhouettes with Victoriana Influence

The silhouette direction for Fall–Winter 2026/2027 leans strongly toward authoritative shapes and defined waistlines.

Many looks feature wide, structured belts that cinch the waist and sculpt a dramatic hourglass form, even in heavier fabrics. The emphasis on structure gives the collection a sense of power and control that contrasts with the softness of lace.

The influence of Victorian fashion is also evident throughout the runway. High collars, long sleeves, and sweeping floor-length gowns evoke historical elegance and theatrical drama.

These references are modernized through strategic sheer panels, allowing glimpses of skin beneath lace layers. The result is a refined sensuality that feels contemporary while maintaining the romantic spirit of couture.

The Sheer Evolution: Invisible Embroidery

From a technical perspective, the collection also highlights advances in lace craftsmanship.

Several garments feature “invisible embroidery,” a technique where floral motifs appear suspended directly on the body with almost no visible netting. The embroidery creates a delicate tattoo-like illusion, giving the impression that the designs are floating on the skin.

This effect merges traditional couture craftsmanship with modern innovation, producing garments that feel simultaneously antique, ethereal, and futuristic.

The technique reinforces Saab’s continued mastery of lace while pushing the boundaries of how transparency and embellishment interact in eveningwear design.

Key Takeaway: Structured Glamour and Dark Romance

The Elie Saab FW 2026/2027 collection reflects a growing shift within luxury fashion toward darker glamour and sculpted femininity.

By combining Gothic tones, dramatic silhouettes, and advanced lace techniques, the house redefines its signature aesthetic for a new era. Rather than abandoning romance, Saab intensifies it—introducing strength, mystery, and architectural structure into traditionally delicate eveningwear.

As the fashion industry moves away from minimalist softness toward bold, statement glamour, Gothic Romanticism is emerging as one of the defining directions for luxury eveningwear in the seasons ahead.
