From Lucknow to Frankfurt: Deepika Khatri’s Journey of Crafting Sustainable Elegance

The journey of Deepika Khatri from the historic city of Lucknow to the chic streets of Frankfurt is a story of passion, artistry, and determination. With roots deeply entrenched in India’s rich textile heritage, Deepika’s designs beautifully meld traditional craftsmanship with modern, eco-conscious sensibilities. Starting with a pivot from a Bachelor of Arts to a degree in Knitwear Design from NIFT Bengaluru, her career took flight as she began designing for renowned global brands like Matalan and Dorothy Perkins. Yet, it was her move to Germany that catalyzed her evolution, as she won the prestigious Fashion Designer Mentoring Program Hessen 2022, showcasing her sustainable couture at the Frankfurt Fashion Lounge.

The Journey Begins

“Growing up in Lucknow, India, my passion for fashion started early. I initially enrolled in a Bachelor of Arts program, but soon realized my true love was design. I took a leap, aced the entrance exam for NIFT Bengaluru, and specialized in Knitwear Design. In my final year, my collection, Bondage, won me the title of ‘Most Creative Knitwear Designer’ from SHIMA SEIKI. After graduating, I joined a top export and buying house in Bengaluru, where I designed for international brands like Matalan, Tally Weijl, UCB, and Dorothy Perkins.

Moving to Frankfurt opened new doors for me. I was thrilled to win the Fashion Designer Mentoring Program Hessen 2022 and to showcase my work at the Frankfurt Fashion Lounge. My designs there, crafted from sustainable Khadi fabric, underscored my commitment to eco-friendly fashion. Recently, I was selected for the Women Entrepreneurship program at Cornell University, sponsored by Bank of America. It’s been an incredible journey so far, and I’m thrilled to see my work featured at Germany’s Marken Gala and in Vogue.”

Blending Cultures: Indian Roots with a German Twist

“Honestly, it’s less about Germany changing my design style and more about it providing me the platform to launch my brand. Growing up in Lucknow, I was surrounded by the city’s rich artistry and embroidery traditions. That heritage has become a part of me and my work. My designs naturally reflect that, as it’s something I deeply love. Through my brand, I aim to bring Lucknow’s legacy to a global stage, blending Indian handcrafts with a Western flair. It’s my way of showcasing the beauty of Indian art within a modern, international context.”

Design Philosophy

“For me, fashion is about more than creating beautiful pieces—it’s about storytelling and honoring craftsmanship. My design philosophy centers around creating timeless, meaningful pieces that reflect artistry and heritage. I want every collection to be a fusion of rich traditions and skilled handwork, something that celebrates true artisanship and slows down the fast-paced fashion cycle.

Our brand values sustainability and social impact, so I work closely with artisans worldwide, sourcing eco-friendly, handwoven fabrics and exploring traditional embroidery techniques. With each piece, I’m proud to showcase the incredible talent of these artisans, bringing their work to a global audience. Ultimately, my goal is to create pieces that people will cherish and hold onto, garments that connect deeply with them.”

Inside the Creative Process

“For me, designing is about creating fashion with meaning. At Deepika Khatri, we’re dedicated to sustainable fashion that’s elegant, comfortable, and unique for each client. I take inspiration from the beauty of sustainable fabrics, like Khadi and natural silk, which not only reflect India’s heritage but also showcase that sustainable fashion can be luxurious.

Every piece is handcrafted with care, using eco-friendly, handloom fabrics and the skills of artisans from diverse backgrounds. My approach emphasizes slow fashion—not only to counter the environmental impact of fast fashion, but as a way to respect craftsmanship and labor. I want to change the perception that sustainable means plain; by blending tradition with luxury, we’re proving that ethical fashion can be beautiful and refined.”

Balancing Trends with Authenticity

“To me, trends bring fresh ideas and shapes that can influence the look of a collection, but authenticity is at the heart of my designs. My work is rooted in the rich heritage of embroidery and intricate detailing, which keeps my style distinct and grounded. I stay true to my love for handcrafted artistry, ensuring each piece reflects this passion.

Balancing relevance and authenticity is all about blending contemporary shapes with timeless craftsmanship. My aim is to create designs that feel both modern and meaningful. At the end of the day, I want to make pieces that people love, feel comfortable in, and wear with confidence.”

Deepika’s commitment to sustainable luxury continues to set her apart, earning her a place in Cornell’s Women Entrepreneurship program, with her work gracing the pages of Vogue Photo and stages across Europe. In every piece, she brings an inspired blend of Indian elegance and Western minimalism, crafting garments that resonate with timeless beauty and purpose.
