How Difficult is the job of a stylist?

Normally its very opposite to people’s notion that it’s a very easy job. It’s a very tedious job with hectic time schedules. Its not your normal 9 to 5 job and no sense of weekend or holidays. You have to be perfect, plan ahead for the project and deliver. It may seem to be a glamorous  job, but behind the scenes it is not that glamorous.

What motivates you in your work?

The challenge and the stress actually motivate me. You end up meeting so many people which is interesting and fun. It is a very stressful job and challenging job but I love doing it. I can’t think of not doing my job because of the stress. The constant pressure helps you do better in your job

What drove you to be a stylist?

It was just the concept of styling. Initially I wanted to be a lawyer as my father is a lawyer. But when I finished my graduation and got into my fashion school, that’s when I got to know about styling, and it really interested me. That’s when I decided to get into the profession.

At the time I started, there were not many stylists, except for editorial stylists and few celebrity stylists. So it was something which gave me a lot of interest to work for it. Then I worked with Harper’s Bazaar for two years and was sure that styling is the thing for me.

How hard it is to be working with the celebrities

Working with celebrities adds more pressure but is fun at the same time. Most of the celebs come with a strong sense of style and individual personality, so you can’t really change personal style which has been there for years. So once you understand their personal style, you can try to mold it in a way which is apt for the occasion. Of course stress levels are a lot more because everything is in strict timeline, but I am lucky to have a good team that helps me get the best results.

What is your mantra for success?

Finding the right balance is the mantra for success. Their will always be agreements and disagreements between you and your client, but art of the job is to find the best possible solution to the disagreements and deliver the best from it.
