Cannes 2025 Says “No” to Nip Slips and Drama Dresses: New Red Carpet Rules Drop

The Cannes red carpet just got a major dress code makeover — and it’s already causing a stir. Nudity? Banned. Massive gowns with mile-long trains? Also banned. As the 2025 Cannes Film Festival approaches, organizers have updated their official charter with some very specific fashion do’s and don’ts. Effective immediately: No full nudity, and no voluminous outfits that block guests or slow down the glam parade.

The festival states the move isn’t to police style, but to keep things moving smoothly and respectfully. Translation: if your look bares too much skin or takes up too much space, you’re not getting on the red carpet — period.

This shift comes after years of jaw-dropping, sheer couture moments from stars like Kendall Jenner, Bella Hadid, Elle Fanning, and more. Not to mention the 2022 topless protester who stripped for Ukraine mid-carpet, and the recent headlines around Bianca Censori’s see-through Grammys gown. Clearly, Cannes has seen enough.

Even drama queens of the dress world aren’t spared — the memo seems to be a direct hit at looks like Tems’ viral sculptural gown at the 2023 Oscars that infamously blocked views in the Dolby Theatre.

Glam with rules, please. The vibe? Haute couture, but under control.

Cannes’ nighttime screenings at the Grand Théâtre Lumière remain strictly black-tie-only affairs, with a firm dress code: tuxedos, long gowns, tailored suits, and elegant shoes only. No oversized bags, no backpacks, and now, no excessive fabric or flash that could upstage the films themselves. So while the world’s biggest stars will still bring the glam, expect it to be sleek, chic, and rule-abiding.
In Conclusion: As Cannes tightens its red carpet rulebook, it’s clear the festival is doubling down on classic elegance and functionality over viral spectacle. While fashion will always be a star at Cannes, the new code draws a bold line between statement-making and spotlight-stealing, pushing celebrities to wow within the bounds of tradition — with just enough room left for haute couture magic.

So if you’re heading to Cannes this year, remember: Keep it classy, streamlined, and red carpet-approved. The drama should stay on the screen — not your outfit.
