Using Aftershaves-Is Yours Safe to use?
Aftershaves have been used since a very long time and replaced alum as an antiseptic to prevent infections due to any minor or deep cuts that you might get during shaving. You use a blade which has iron as one of its constituents will most probably lead to infection when in contact with blood and left open.
But with its benefits it turns out the aftershave, the alcohol-based astringent being used world over, can actually very much harm to your skin, according to Dr. Terrence Keaney, a dermatologist working with Dove’s Men+ Care line.
Dr. Terrence has pointed out that the alcohol is a major irritant and will dry your skin out. Additionally, the heavy fragrance isn’t something you want to put on your skin after it has been stripped of its oils after shaving.
“You’re putting it on skin that’s just been shaved, so you’re removing all those barriers and slapping a very heavy alcohol solution so that could really irritate”, said Dr. Keaney. Aftershaves may also contain Stearate Citrate which has the same antiseptic effect on cuts and wounds. Many aftershaves also contain Menthol whose basic function is to numb the damaged skin and to soothe it.
Specialists recommend aftershaves that contain moisturisers.Or you can use a moisturiser after using your aftershave. While this won’t produce the familiar burning sensation, it will replace some of that moisture that you lost while shaving.
So time to find out what kind of an aftershave you are using.
