Understanding signs that your partner needs space.
Personal Space matters in any relationship. This might sound like a mushy dialogue from a romantic novel, but a little bit of introspection will reveal the truth in this statement. Of course, almost every relationship guide starts from explaining how much ‘giving space’ is vital for a healthy relationship to thrive. And its very much true. Every one needs a bit of space for him or her and its for the partner to understnad exactly when is the key to a happy relationship.
Normally, these signs are misunderstood and hence cause a great deal of problems in a relationship sometimes even ending them. Hence its very important for everyone to understand these signs as they appear and never to misinterpret them.
Creating emotional distance: There are some men who will not express their need for space. They will continue to respond to your calls and text messages. However, if you find that your conversations with him is lacking the ‘personal touch’ then take the hint and ask him politely about his feelings and whether he needs space.
Guys should follow the same rule when their girlfriends need space to think things over.
Spending time independently: Sometimes relationships can make us forget our own needs and interests. It is true that you always want to spend quality time with each other but at the same time you have to find time to pursue your career or hobbies. Make some time to visit your own friends so that they don’t feel neglected. Establish an open communication with your partner and avoid clinging to your beau when he or she has requested for space.
The disappearing act:There may be times when your partner stops communication with you at times. This essentially does not mean that he/she has lst interest in you.Sometime people in a new relationship are often confused and need time to think. Or it may be the case that they are introvert and are finding it hard to express their problems. At such juncture, one should let loose of one’s ego and try to softly communicate with the partner without trying it too hard as well. Give your partner time and reason to love you. The rest your partner will on his/her own.
Putting it bluntly: There is nothing wrong in requesting for space directly! In fact, you should respect the person’s honesty. Of course, it will make you feel sad to hear those three words but try to understand why he or she needs space. Sometimes, your partner will be asking for space to fulfill his personal commitments. Don’t misinterpret it as a personal attack.
Talking vaguely: The phrase ‘I want space’ sounds ambiguous. So, you can ask your partner the exact meaning of ‘space’ without sounding irritated. It is better to be clear about how he or she feels about the relationship and whether they want to take it forward. Honesty is the best policy in such a situation.
Conflicting interests and mood fluctuations: Are you becoming a little snappy without provocation? If the conversations with your partner are marked by arguments then creating a ‘healthy space’ in the relationship is justified. This is a sign that both of you need to reflect on what is wrong with the relationship and the ways to resolve it.
Women often panic when a guy starts to back away, a feeling of insecurity creeps in. The reality is men have a strong desire for autonomy even when they are deeply involved in a relationship. It is not uncommon for a guy to pull back, in fact it is a good thing. The space allows them to reestablish a strong relationship with their partner. Woman has a capacity for greater emotional intimacy and thus looks for ‘deeply connected’ relationship both with their partners and girlfriends. This rule remains same whether you are married or single, and also if you are in a long-distance relationship.
It is vital that you respect each other’s boundaries. If your guy or girl doesn’t want to talk or receive text messages, then don’t hound the person. Utilize this time to focus on yourself and enjoy the company of your friends. Remember ‘live and let live’ is a key to a strong and happy relationship.
