How did you start your journey as a fashion designer ? What made you incline towards fashion designing ?
One of my most memorable childhood memories is cutting up my grandma’s sarees to make clothes for my dolls. Since then I haven’t stopped designing clothes. be it styling my mum to a wedding or revamping and upcycling my Grandmother’s treasures from her trunks. It feels like I was always meant to do this!

What are the primary inspiration behind your collections ?
At Niya Bajaj we present two collections each year. Our summer collection is pretwear and winter collections are mostly directed towards the festive season.Summer collections mostly display an interpretation of a signature print in easy ready-to-wear silhouettes, whereas the festive collection displays our signature hand embroidery of sequins and pearl work. Inspiration comes from anywhere. Be it the Aegean cats from my recent trip to Greece culminating into the ‘Meow’ collection or ‘Sprinkle’ inspired from the constellation of stars represented by Hand artisans sequin spreads. This year we present Gul by Nitya Bajaj which is a beautiful combination of florals with sequin sheeting and pearlwork.
What is your outlook on Indian fashion industry and its future prospects?
I am proud of our county and its rich heritage. Each state, each community has its values, and something new and interesting to contribute to art and fashion.India has been ever inspiring to us and also to the world. Many artisans are also commissioned by big fashion houses for hand embroidery and meticulous craftsmanship. During the pandemic, Nitya Bajaj tried to generate employment opportunities for our daily wage workers and artisans in the ‘Save The Artist’ initiative. Indian fashion continues to inspire many and I foresee us and many other Indian brands representing India at International shows and runways.
