Featuring Actress and Author Himanee Bhatia
Describe your journey as an author. What attracted you towards writing ?
As a child, my favorite subjects were creative writing and theatre. I am doing both now as an author and actress! Before I became an author, I would journal everyday about my day, my feelings, my secrets – my notebook and pen were my best friends and secret keepers. In fact I wrote my first short story when I was 6 years old.
The lockdown happened in 2020, and all my projects were delayed. So I decided to make the most of my creative energy and started doing something I loved as much as acting, which was writing.
One thing led to another, I first wrote my English poetry book, ‘Radiance’ which was literally a journal where I would pen down my thoughts that I converted into a book.
Then ‘Ten Fireflies’, the fiction book happened, as I loved creating stories and writing in them. I wanted to always write a book about siblings full of drama, comedy, life experiences, love, them finding romance, career struggles , personal growth as I knew how tough it is for a young person to find their feet and who they are these days. As a young girl, I would write my own stories and enact them, in fact my first short film ‘Act Normal’ on mental health was completely written and conceptualized by me.
My Hindi poetry book, ‘Saanjh Savere’ which is releasing very soon is also literally just me penning down my thoughts in hindi.
I always wrote things that I found interesting around me, since the longest time. I still do.
When I find something interesting I like to write about it. I feel everyone around you has a story each, waiting to be told.
Tell us about some of your authored work
I have written a book titled ‘Ten Fireflies’ which is about 3 siblings- and how their bond evolves over time. It is a story set in South Delhi, and all the characters have multiple layers in them. I always wanted to write something which wasn’t sad as I feel there is already so much sadness in the world, and when we read a book, we often look for a ‘happy ending’. One of the characters, who is the youngest of the 3 siblings, Sheena is based on me. Infact if you look at the cover, you will see me clearly!
My second book is my journal published. I would always write poetry whenever and wherever, whether it was making notes on my phone or penning a thought, ‘Radiance’ my English poetry book happened this way.
My third book, ‘Saanjh Savere’ which means day and night , is a Hindi poetry book and releases next month. It is a representation for what I believe in and my experiences penned down.
As an actor and entertainer, what does fashion mean to you?
I feel fashion should be one of my happy places. I dont believe in giving into a trend unless I genuinely love it.
I like creating my own sense of style and the only trend that I follow is my own uniqueness. I believe that’s my USP for looking fashionable.
What is the most intense life expereince that you have had that has impacted your work so far ?
I have had extremely intense experiences in my life. Maybe that’s why I am an author as well!
Alot of my acting comes from the experiences I’ve had so it’s difficult to point one.
But yes, I did realise I am an empath when someone extremely close to me at work, when I was working in KPMG as a legal and risk consultant, was going through severe depression. I wanted to help her as much as I could, but I did realise there was a lack of awareness in our society. I decided to make a short film on mental health titled ‘Act Normal’ which was my first film, I wrote and acted in it. I realized I wanted to do and make a difference through my art in society, be it acting, writing, and poems. This experience of empathy was my biggest motivation and gave birth to the artist in me.
