Cowardly Terror Attack in Pahalgam Leaves 26 Dead, Shocks Nation

Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir, April 22, 2025 – A horrific terrorist attack struck the serene Baisaran Valley in Pahalgam, a popular tourist destination in Jammu and Kashmir’s Anantnag district, on Tuesday afternoon, claiming the lives of at least 26 tourists and injuring several others in what authorities are calling one of the deadliest assaults on civilians in recent years. The attack, condemned as “cowardly” and “heinous” by leaders across the political spectrum, has sent shockwaves through India and raised urgent questions about security in the region.

According to officials, the assault occurred around 2:30 PM IST when unidentified gunmen opened fire on a group of tourists trekking in the remote and scenic Baisaran Valley, accessible only by foot or horseback. Eyewitnesses reported that the attackers fired indiscriminately from close range, targeting unarmed civilians. Among the victims was Manjunath Rao from Shivamogga, Karnataka, whose wife Pallavi and son, present at the scene, survived the ordeal. At least 12 others were injured, with four in critical condition, authorities confirmed.

The Resistance Front (TRF), a proxy of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, claimed responsibility for the attack, though official confirmation is pending. Sources within central agencies revealed that Pakistani terror outfits had conducted reconnaissance of several Kashmiri tourist spots, including Pahalgam, between April 1 and 7, raising suspicions of Lashkar-e-Taiba’s involvement. Security agencies believe at least three terrorists executed the meticulously planned attack, timed to coincide with the peak tourist season and the ongoing registration for the Amarnath Yatra.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, visibly shaken, described the attack as “much larger than anything we’ve seen directed at civilians in recent years.” In a post on X, he called the perpetrators “animals, inhuman & worthy of contempt,” expressing solidarity with the victims’ families and refraining from disclosing the exact death toll, which he said was still being ascertained. Abdullah immediately returned to Srinagar to oversee rescue and medical operations, while Health Minister Sakina Itoo rushed to hospitals to ensure proper care for the injured.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, currently on an overseas visit, condemned the attack in the strongest terms, vowing that “those behind this heinous act will be brought to justice.” In a telephonic conversation with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Modi directed immediate measures to enhance security and assist the affected. Shah departed for Srinagar to conduct an urgent security review meeting with top officials, including Northern Army Commander Lt Gen MV Suchendra Kumar, who is monitoring the situation on the ground. The Army has deployed Rashtriya Rifles teams to track the terrorists, and security forces have cordoned off the area for combing operations.

The attack drew widespread condemnation from political leaders and global allies. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge called it a “blot on humanity,” urging the government to prioritize national security. Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition, labeled the attack “heartbreaking” and criticized the government for “hollow claims” about normalcy in Jammu and Kashmir, demanding concrete steps to prevent future incidents. President Droupadi Murmu termed the assault “shocking and painful,” while Defence Minister Rajnath Singh called it an “act of cowardice.” External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, and Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal also expressed outrage, with Kejriwal stating, “Targeting unarmed innocents is an attack on humanity.”

The Anantnag Police established a 24/7 emergency help desk (contact: 9596777669, 01932225870, WhatsApp: 9419051940) to assist tourists, and helicopters were deployed to evacuate the injured to hospitals, including GMC Anantnag. Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice, assuring the public that “those behind this despicable attack will not go unpunished.”

Locals expressed distress over the attack’s impact on tourism, a vital source of income. “We are in distress right now. Our source of income has been snatched from us,” said Omar, a local resident, in an interview with ANI. Another resident, Mohd. Umar, added, “It is a big loss for us. We want justice.”

The attack has reignited concerns about cross-border terrorism, with BJP leader Ravinder Raina accusing “Pakistani terrorists” of targeting civilians to destabilize the region. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) is set to take over the probe, with a team scheduled to visit Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday to investigate potential security lapses and the involvement of foreign terror groups.

As the nation mourns, the Pahalgam attack serves as a grim reminder of the persistent threat of terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir. Authorities have intensified security measures across the region, particularly with the Amarnath Yatra approaching, to prevent further tragedies and restore confidence among tourists and locals alike.
