Australian Fashion Week Secures New Funding from State Government
Australian Fashion Week (AFW) will proceed in 2025 in Sydney, following a successful bid for funding by the Australian Fashion Council (AFC). The event is set to occur from May 12-16 at Carriageworks, with financial backing from the NSW Government through its agency, Destination NSW.
Strategically, AFW founder Simon Lock has been brought back to contribute to the organization of the 2025 event. This move comes after the previous operator, IMG, announced in November that it would no longer support AFW, which had previously put the event’s future at risk.
AFC chair Marianne Perkovic expressed gratitude for the support from both the NSW Government and the fashion industry, stating, “The AFC looks forward to delivering a world-class experience in 2025 and evolving the event in the future.” She highlighted that the 2025 event would be a significant step towards an industry-led initiative, akin to successful international models, with more staff announcements expected soon.
AFC CEO Jaana Quaintance-James emphasized the role of AFW not just as an event but as a driver for growth and innovation in Australian fashion, stating, “This NSW Government support is a testament to the trust placed in the AFC and our vision for an industry-led future.” The collaboration with Destination NSW and industry experts aims to enhance AFW’s impact on designers and the creative economy.
This year has been challenging for the Australian fashion sector, marked by the closure of several iconic brands and retailers. Notably, Dion Lee announced its closure in September after failing to secure a buyer following voluntary administration, with major investor Cue pulling out. Additionally, luxury multi-brand retailer Harrolds entered liquidation in October, with liabilities exceeding AUD$16 million.
