Val Kilmer, Iconic ‘Top Gun’ and ‘Batman Forever’ Star, Passes Away at 65
Val Kilmer, the versatile actor celebrated for his roles in Top Gun, Batman Forever, and The Doors, has passed away at the age of 65. His daughter, Mercedes Kilmer, confirmed that he died on April 1, 2025, in Los Angeles due to complications from pneumonia.

Born on December 31, 1959, in Los Angeles, Kilmer trained at Juilliard and initially pursued a career in theater. However, he quickly gained widespread recognition in Hollywood with his portrayal of Tom “Iceman” Kazansky in the 1986 blockbuster Top Gun. He further cemented his status as a leading man with roles such as Jim Morrison in The Doors (1991) and the titular character in Batman Forever (1995).
In 2014, Kilmer was diagnosed with throat cancer, which led to a tracheotomy that affected his ability to speak. Despite these health challenges, he remained dedicated to his craft and made a poignant return as Iceman in the 2022 sequel, Top Gun: Maverick.
Tributes have poured in from Hollywood and fans worldwide. Director Michael Mann, who worked with Kilmer on Heat, remarked that his passing was “tremendously sad news” after years of battling illness while maintaining his spirit. Actor Josh Gad also paid tribute, calling Kilmer “a true legend of our time.”
