Sydney Sweeney’s Denim Campaign Sparks 16% Surge in American Eagle Stock
American Eagle Outfitters (NYSE: AEO) saw its shares soar 16% on Thursday, fueled by the launch of a high-profile denim campaign starring Sydney Sweeney. The “Euphoria” and “The White Lotus” actress fronts the retailer’s fall denim collection in a campaign titled “Sydney Sweeney Has Great (American Eagle) Jeans,” which debuted Wednesday and is reportedly the company’s most expensive marketing effort to date.

The campaign, featuring a limited-edition denim jacket and “The Sydney Jean,” aims to reignite demand among Gen-Z shoppers as American Eagle navigates a challenging retail landscape marked by cautious consumer spending and looming tariff uncertainties. The stock, trading at $12.55 before the market opened Thursday, also caught fire on social media, ranking as the fourth-most trending ticker on Stocktwits, a platform popular with retail investors. American Eagle’s strategic bet on Sweeney taps into a proven formula of celebrity-driven momentum. In 2020, Crocs shares surged after a collaboration tease from Justin Bieber, and American Eagle itself has previously partnered with stars like tennis phenom Coco Gauff and actress Jenna Ortega.
The Sweeney campaign, amplified by a dazzling display across Las Vegas’s 3D Sphere exosphere, underscores the retailer’s push to stand out in a crowded apparel market. The U.S. retail sector has faced headwinds as consumers, squeezed by financial pressures, cut back on non-essential purchases like clothing and accessories. American Eagle, which sources much of its inventory from China, withdrew its annual forecasts in May citing uncertainty over potential tariff-related price hikes. With short interest in the company at 12.2% of public float, according to LSEG data, Thursday’s rally signals strong investor confidence in Sweeney’s ability to drive buzz and sales.
The campaign’s timing aligns with a broader wave of retail investor enthusiasm, with highly shorted stocks like Kohl’s also seeing recent gains. As American Eagle leans into Sweeney’s cultural cachet, the retailer is betting that her star power can help it thread the needle between economic challenges and Gen-Z’s appetite for fresh, trendsetting style.
