Louis Vuitton Chooses Avignon’s Palais des Papes for Landmark Cruise 2026 Fashion Show
Luxury fashion powerhouse Louis Vuitton has officially revealed the location for its highly anticipated Cruise 2026 show. On May 22, the brand will take over the iconic Palais des Papes in Avignon, marking a historic first for the Gothic landmark and a new chapter in the maison’s tradition of staging its runway collections in culturally and architecturally significant settings.

Perched above the Rhône River in the heart of Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, the 14th-century palace—Europe’s largest Gothic fortress and a UNESCO World Heritage Site—will provide a dramatic backdrop for Artistic Director Nicolas Ghesquière’s latest vision in women’s fashion. The announcement further cements Louis Vuitton’s reputation for seamlessly blending heritage, travel, and design innovation.
Commissioned by Pope Benedict XII in 1335, the Palais des Papes spans over 161,000 square feet and houses 25 grand public rooms. Though steeped in ecclesiastical and political history, the site has never before hosted a fashion show—making the Cruise 2026 presentation a groundbreaking cultural moment for both the fashion world and the city of Avignon.
Louis Vuitton’s cruise—or resort wear—collections have consistently celebrated global artistry and iconic architecture. Previous show locations include John Lautner’s futuristic Hope Residence in Palm Springs, Oscar Niemeyer’s Contemporary Art Museum in Brazil, I.M. Pei’s serene Miho Museum in Kyoto, and the Salk Institute in California. The upcoming Avignon show follows French stops in Monaco’s Place du Palais and Saint-Paul de Vence’s Fondation Maeght.
In alignment with its ongoing commitment to cultural preservation and community enrichment, Louis Vuitton will also fund a new public lighting initiative in Avignon. The project aims to illuminate the city’s historic landmarks—including the Palais des Papes, Avignon Cathedral, Petit Palais, Hôtel des Monnaies, and Hôtel Calvet de la Palun—enhancing both visibility and nighttime allure.
Beyond its medieval grandeur, the Palais des Papes serves as a vibrant cultural venue, regularly hosting exhibitions and performances. It is also the central stage for the renowned Festival d’Avignon, founded in 1947 by legendary French actor Jean Vilar. The Cruise 2026 show will coincide with festivities marking the 25th anniversary of Avignon’s historic center being named a UNESCO World Heritage site.
