Halle Berry Show-Stopping Gaurav Gupta Gown Gets Pulled Last-Minute
Cannes Imposes Strict New Red Carpet Rules But Halle Berry Taking It in Stride. She was all set to make a jaw-dropping entrance at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival in a couture gown by celebrated Indian designer Gaurav Gupta—until the festival’s newly tightened red carpet rules put a hard stop to her fashion plans.

During a press conference with the official competition jury, Berry revealed that she had to change her outfit at the eleventh hour due to Cannes’ updated dress code, which now bans full nudity and imposes restrictions on what organizers are calling “excessively voluminous” garments. Among the banned styles: dresses with long trains—like the one Gupta had custom-designed for Berry’s red carpet appearance.
“I had an amazing dress by Gaurav Gupta that I cannot wear tonight because it’s too big of a train,” Berry shared candidly, expressing both her disappointment and understanding. “I’m not going to break the rules. The nudity part is also probably a good rule.”
The change in protocol was formally announced on May 12, just days before the festival opened. According to Cannes officials, the rules are meant to uphold the “institutional framework” of the event and comply with French law. “The aim is not to regulate attire per se, but to prohibit full nudity on the red carpet,” read the statement. The festival also reserves the right to deny access to attendees whose outfits could block red carpet movement or complicate seating arrangements inside screening venues.
Berry, who is known for pushing the envelope with her red carpet fashion, is taking the shift in stride. The actress is serving on this year’s prestigious competition jury alongside a powerhouse panel that includes “Succession” Emmy winner Jeremy Strong, Indian filmmaker Payal Kapadia (“All We Imagine as Light”), South Korean auteur Hong Sangsoo, Italian actor Alba Rohrwacher, French-Moroccan novelist Leïla Slimani, Congolese documentarian Dieudo Hamadi, and acclaimed Mexican director Carlos Reygadas. French cinema legend Juliette Binoche is presiding as jury president.
While Berry’s statement gown may not make its Cannes debut, her graceful handling of the situation—and her support for the festival’s evolving standards—proves she’s not just a fashion icon, but a class act.
