Beauty Industry Giant Leonard Lauder Dies at 92
Leonard A. Lauder, the visionary leader who transformed Estée Lauder Companies into a global cosmetics empire, passed away on Saturday, June 14, 2025, at his home in Manhattan’s Upper East Side, surrounded by family. He was 92. The Estée Lauder Companies announced his death on Sunday, describing him as a “true visionary, fearless leader, and cherished friend.”

Born on March 19, 1933, in New York City, Leonard Leonard was the eldest son of Estée and Joseph H. Lauder, who founded the eponymous cosmetics company in 1946. Growing up immersed in the family business, Leonard recalled accompanying his mother on sales calls and packing boxes of face creams and powders as a boy. “The company and I grew up together, our lives as closely paired as twins,” he wrote in his 2020 memoir, The Company I Keep: My Life in Beauty.
Leonard Lauder joined Estée Lauder in 1958 at age 25, when the company had fewer than a dozen employees and less than $1 million in annual sales. A graduate of the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and a former U.S. Navy lieutenant, he brought a strategic mindset to the fledgling business. Over his six-decade career, he served as president (1972–1999), CEO (1982–1999), and chairman (1995–2009), remaining chairman emeritus until his death. Under his leadership, the company expanded from a niche skincare brand into a global powerhouse with nearly 30 brands, including Clinique, Aramis, MAC, Bobbi Brown, Aveda, and La Mer, sold in 150 countries.
A pioneer of industry innovation, Leonard Lauder established the company’s first research and development laboratory in the mid-1990s and spearheaded its expansion into Europe and Asia. He coined the “Lipstick Index,” observing that lipstick sales often rose during economic downturns as consumers opted for affordable luxuries. His strategic acquisitions and brand launches helped Estée Lauder achieve a market capitalization of approximately $24.3 billion, with Leonard’s personal net worth estimated at $15.6 billion by Bloomberg’s Billionaire Index.
